David Soulsby

David Soulsby was born in the West Midlands in 1948 and is a geologist, artist and an occasional film-maker. As an artist he is self-taught and his interest in art goes back to the early years at primary school. After graduating from university in the early 1970s he first went to Africa to work as a geologist in mining and base metal exploration. Returning home to Britain after a few years he began working as a freelance operator and consultant in the oil, gas, geotechnical and water supply development fields, the latter often in remote parts of the developing world.

This rather unconventional lifestyle also allowed him to devote more solid time to drawing and painting in between work contracts. It also presented opportunities for extensive foreign travel, which would provide inspiration for much of his artistic work in the 1980s and later.

As an artist Mr. Soulsby has shown in a few multiple exhibitions in London and Manchester but has usually only sold work privately. Mr. Soulsby’s creative roots lie in the classical surrealism and metaphysical art of such artists as Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, and Giorgio de Chirico. His films include a number of corporate and training programmes and a geological history of Iceland. In his paintings, Mr. Soulsby expresses ideas in the realms of politics, science, social issues, personal experiences and pure surrealism in a realistic style. He puts special effort into making each work individual and unique, within the limits of one artist’s method.

Mr. Soulsby now lives in Stilton, near Peterborough.
