Late in 2005 I was part of the Red Cross mission to the earthquake-devastated region of Pakistani Kashmir.

Most of the casualties in collapsed houses and schools were women and children, so thousands of husbands and fathers lost their loved ones.

Everywhere we went, men were in a state of shock, and could only sit and watch as rescue efforts swirled around them, like the dust from squadrons of helicopters. There seemed to be a disconnection between the old life, the new crisis, and attempts at humanitarian aid.

When hanging this picture I wondered why a piece of this picture was missing - Obvious really, when ones looks at the picture- part of these men's lives have been lost.
